Mummy Dogs Recipe
Wrap up hot dogs into spooky mummies with this fun Halloween style recipe.
Servings 8 Mummy Dogs
- 1 can 8 oz Pillsbury Refrigerated Crescent Dough Sheet or 1 can (8 oz) Pillsbury Refrigerated Crescent Rolls
- 8 Oscar Meyer Hot Dogs (Or preferred brand)
- 2 Slices American Cheese (Quartered) Optional
- Cooking Spray Optional - Your favorite brand
- 1 tsp Mayonaise Optional
- 1 Black Olive Optional
- 1 tsp Mustard Optional (Instead of Mayo & Olive Eyes)
- Mustard (for web design)
- 2-4 Toothpicks For Eyes and Web Design in Ketchup
Making the Mummy Hot Dogs
Open Pillsbury and unwrap dough. -If using the dough sheet, unroll the dough and cut into 4 rectangles.- If using the crescent roll dough, unroll the dough, seperate at the perforations to create 4 equal sized rectangles. Next pinch the other (diagonal) perforations to seal the dough together.
Using a pizza cutter, knife or kitchen scissors slice each rectangle lengthwise into 8 thin strips about 1/8 inch wide. You will have a total of 32 strips of dough when you are done.
Optional - If you want to add cheese do this now. Quarter each slice of cheese by cutting it in ½ and then cutting the half slice in ½ again. Each of the Pillsbury mummy hot dogs will use ¼ of a piece of cheese between the dough and the meat. Mummy dogs will bake "Cheese side" down and "Face side" up. Next wrap 4 strips of dough around each hot dog. (Add 1/4 slice of cheese, optional) The strips of dough should not be neat, but rather should look like bandages. Stretch the dough slightly to completely cover the hot dog. Leave an open space near the tip for a face with eyes.
Optional - Spray mummy dogs lightly with your favorite cooking spray or brush with an egg wash for a nicer looking finished product.
Place mummy hot dogs on ungreased cookie sheet and Bake for 15-19 minutes until dough is golden brown.
Mummy Dogs Eyes
There are a few options for adding eyes to your finished mummy hot dogs. Some people even buy candy eyes and use those for a great looking design. For convenience, here are multiple options below.
Option #1: You can simply use a toothpick to dab on a drop of mustard, ketchup or mayonnaise for the eyes. You can also use mayonaisse as the whites and then ketchup for the pupils.
Option #2: This is my prefered option because it's still simple and it looks great. Scare up some mummy eyes using a toothpick to apply drops of mayonnaise for the whites of the eyes. Next, slice 2 tiny pieces of black olive and place them in the middle of each mayo drop to use as pupils. Option #3: You can use any white cheese, cut into small circles for the whites of the eyes. Apply these to the "face" soon after the mummy hot dogs are removed from the oven so they melt and stick to the hot dog. Next, cut 2 tiny pieces of black olive and place them in the middle of each cheese eye, as "pupils".
Once eyes are complete your mummy hot dogs are ready to be served!
Dipping Sauce Web Effect (Optional)
Serve ketchup in a bowl and then make a tiny dot with mustard at the center of the bowl. Draw a small medium and large circle with mustard around the dot. Next place a toothpick at the center dot and drag it from the center dot to the edge of the bowl in a straight line. This will drag through the mustard lines and creat a web effect. (See pic)Do this 5 or 6 more times, always starting at the center dot and you will have a nice spider web dipping sauce for the mummy dogs.
